Home Remedies for Seborrheic Dermatitis - Dandruff

Home for remedies for Seborrheic dermatitis is available and can be treated effectively for a complete recovery.  Actually, Seborrheic dermatitis is a skin condition and it is common that affects the scalp.

It is a scaly patch in red on the skin with concentrated dandruff. This dermatitis can appear on the chest, back or even on your face on oily skin.  One good thing about Seborrheic dermatitis is that does not affect your health. It can make you uncomfortable with itching and irritation and feel embarrassed.

This skin condition is not infectious or transmittable. The cause of the skin condition is due to the discharge of oil with Malassezia fungus (yeast) on the skin and inflammatory.

In a certain part of the world, early spring or winter it can get worse. Since this skin condition is usually long a term, repeated treatment is required to have healed fully.

Seborrheic dermatitis also is known as seborrheic eczema or seborrheic psoriasis or in normal terms called dandruff in patches.

  • Greasy red skin in patches covered with yellow scales or white flaky scales.   Also flaky crust on the face, chest, scrotum, ears and etc.
  • Dandruff or skin flakes appearing on scalp, hair, beard, eyebrows or mustache
  • Patches of red skin on the scalp, face, chest or on the back.
  • Itchiness or irritation in the affected areas of the skin.

1. Wash hair using Medicated Anti-Dandruff Shampoo

Use a medicated shampoo that can be bought over the counter. Ensure buying your shampoo according to your skin type. Buy shampoo with selenium (Selsun Blue) or Zinc pyrithione (Head & Shoulders) and apply daily.

Shampoo your hair with antifungal ketoconazole. Use this twice a week.

Tar shampoo (Neutrogena T/Gel, DHS Tar) or Salicylic acid shampoo (Neutrogena T/Sal) also works well in curing seborrheic dermatitis. Apply these shampoo daily on the scalp during the bath.

Try two shampoos and that is helpful to check which one works for you. Little of these shampoos could be applied on the face, chest, back or ears if those areas also affected.

2. Olive oil massage

Olive oil softens dandruff and helps to clear when rinsing with water.  Daily apply olive oil and massage the scalp gently and leave it for about 4 to 5 hours and then wash your hair and scalp.

3. Mild Soap Wash

Use always mild soap to wash your hair and scalp and even for the shower. Wash your scalp and hair properly and make sure that soap is rinsed off fully. Wash regularly and at least once a day. Use a moisturizer for your body after the shower.

4. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple Cider Vinegar helps to clear your dandruff problems because it can control the causes of dandruff.

Just apply the mixed equal quantities of apple cider vinegar and water over the scalp.  Cover the heard by wrapping with a dry towel for about 30 minutes.  Then rinse your scalp thoroughly with water.  Repeating twice a week gives the best results.

5. Mild corticosteroid Cream Or Antifungal Cream

Apply hydrocortisone cream or calamine lotion to reduce itching and irritation on the skin.

6. Eyelids showing redness

Gently wash the eyelids before going to bed with baby shampoo and slowly wipe off the scales with a cotton swab. Alternatively, you could use hot compresses also.


Do not use any products that contain alcohol. Alcohol can make the seborrheic dermatitis skin condition worse.

Always use soft cotton base clothing. This provides good ventilation for the skin and helps reduced skin itchiness.

The seborrheic dermatitis skin condition can become worse under beard and mustache.  Consider shaving the beard off to have this skin condition fully healed.

Never scratch the affected areas. Scratching can allow the infection to spread and also increases skin irritation.
